begin的基本意思是“開始”,用作及物動詞時,指做某事的第一個步驟、第一個行動或第一部分,強調(diào)某種狀態(tài)的“開端”,特別是較緩慢的開端。begin也可用作不及物動詞,以活動、工作、機械為主語,表示開始動或處于動的狀態(tài)中。
begin用作及物動詞時,后接名詞、代詞、動名詞、動詞不定式或含有疑問詞的動詞不定式作賓語。begin還可用作系動詞,后接形容詞作表語。
begin可用其現(xiàn)在時表示未來的事,也可用其進(jìn)行時表示“漸漸開始”“即將開始”等。
begin是非持續(xù)性動詞,不能與表示一段時間的狀語連用。但可與表示時間點的狀語連用。
begin的現(xiàn)在分詞beginning還可以在句中作定語或狀語。
to begin with作“首先,起初”解,用作插入語,可放在句首、句中,也可放在句末。
